Consolidating itunes music folders
i Tunes is a popular free application from Apple which, among other things, can import, organize and play back a library of music.
All Macs come with i Tunes preinstalled and a Windows version is also available free of charge.
In such a world, any player can play music purchased from any store, and any store can sell music which is playable on all players.
If your Mac's hard drive is getting full, you can move your entire i Tunes library to an external hard drive to free up space.
